About Steve Newell Photography

Hello everyone and Welcome to my World!!!

I have lived in Lake Tahoe since 1984.  I started my photography career by taking a Black and White photography class at Lake Tahoe Community College.  My instructor Doug Highland, who was a new hire at the time in 2003 opened a whole new world for me through his vision and his photography philosophy.  “ Think before you shoot! “ Create a vision, story board your ideas and seek input from others.  Then shoot, present for more feedback and then shoot again.  My plan was to learn how to take professional photos of all the extreme sports I was doing at the time.  I was hoping to make money off of my traveling and while playing.

In 2003 I was given a Special Recognition Award at the Annual Spring Student Art Display for my image titled “ 20th Century Man vs 21st Century Woman”.   After my Photojournalism class- I was recruited by the local newspaper the Tahoe Daily Tribune.  Eventually I started freelancing and covered events, like- Celebrity Golf and The PGA Tour’s 2009 President’s Cup at Harding Park GC, San Francisco.  My images have been used in newspapers, magazines, web sites, advertising and marketing.

My first print I had enlarged to 44”x63” was titled “Winter Wonderland”  The print was so big the local framer didn’t have a press large enough to frame it.  I found one in San Francisco and had it framed.  Doug Rousse, owner of Master Frames, bought a large framing press to do over sized prints like mine.  Doug then introduced me to Heavenly Village Art Gallery located in the Marriot Complex.  One week later I sold my first print out of the gallery for $3400.

I had to donate the first original large print I mentioned earlier to the Angora Fire Fundraiser.  It raised $2000 and was the top auction item.  I write, “had to donate” due to the quality issues of the paper and frame.

I pride my self on delivering the highest quality product 100% of the time.  I use Joe Rousse of Carson City Fast Frame to do all of my custom matting and framing.  Joe also guarantees 100% satisfaction with every order.

I have been a member of the Tahoe Art League since 2008 and served on the Board of Directors in the past.  Last year I changed my business name to Steve Newell Photography and started a new web site- www.stevenewellphotography.com .  I do my own printing on an Epson Stylus Pro 9900 that uses the new Epson UltraChrome K3 HDR Ink.  Epson’s boast is the color gamut is better than any ink – ever. I print on Epson Premium Luster 260 photo paper and Epson Exhibition Canvas along with Sunset Metallic by LexJet.

My motto is “ SIZE DOES MATTER “
